Lot Note(s): Signed lower right. Fine condition with no issues noted. Provenance: Estate of a private collector, Basel, Switzerland. Comment(s): An oil on paper work with a similar composition but much smaller size sold for $3,750 at Christie's New York, July 16, 2012, lot #120. Tobey was a mystical Wisconsin-born artist whose works had a visual affinity with Abstract Expressionism but shared more in common with Asian art and calligraphy (he studied at a Zen monastery in Kyoto, Japan, in the 1930s).
